The World Marathon Majors - History

In January 2006 the 5 organisers from the Boston, London, Chicago, Berlin and New York marathons launched the World Marathon Majors offering $1,000,000 to be split between the best male and best female marathon runner who accumulated the most points for their finishing places spread over a 2 years period.

Given the closeness between some of the races (2 marathons within 6 days of each other and 2 within 7 days of each other) it is not surprising that the competition runs over 2 years, and we will be doing it in half that time!!.

Why?

We have both ran marathons before but given that the Majors is only a year old the number of people who will have achieved this challenge within the same calendar year will be a handful if that (actually we don’t know for sure if anyone has achieved it!).

It’s for charity mate! We have places for all but one of the marathons without the need to collect any charity money at all, but what is the point of achieving a personal goal if you do not share the benefit with someone less privileged than you. We have therefore decided that rather than raise money for one particular charity we will give something back to the cities that will be our hosts and support during each race. The charity theme is “children” and please take the time to see our Charities page to find out who we hope to help from your kind generosity.
